MEMORIAL TO BOB BECKMAN

As the board searches for appropriate ways to memorialize Bob Beckman, one idea has the most potential. That idea is to place a flag pole at the hangar site with a stone marker base which will be the memorial to Bob. In order to do this it is necessary to raise funds for the pole and marker. The Board has asked that all members interested in participating to contact Steve Clapper and express their interest and pledge of money to this project.

A good quality flag pole and stone marker will cost in the neighborhood of about $3,ooo dollars. They feel this would be an appropriate memorial site for Bob and could possibly be expanded in the future with more names that would be of this level of recognition. Call Steve today (614) 877- 9872. Or you can call the Hangar at 614- 899-9690. This will be a verbal intent and Steve will advise you as to when the money will be required.

There are several other ideas for a memorial to Bob being considered at this time. Your participation will determine the full extent of this effort.

THE FOLLAND GNAT PROJECT
Gnat budget considerations are being made to have the Folland Gnat painted in the near future. Working with members of the Bob McDorman Chevrolet Service and Body departments, Wayne Swisher has secured a donation of paints and paint prep materials. Such a generous donation makes it possible to complete the restoration for a minimum amount of money. This puts us on the way to completing the Gnat as a permanent static display for the Historical Aircraft Squadron.

Update from Mike Lorenzi On October 14, Mike Lorenzi went to visit with a fellow co=worker of Wayne Swisher (H.A.S.’s Vice President) to discuss working on the Gnat with him. Mike met with and invited Ty Lonstress at the hangar. Ty had been to our 2002 airshow and had some idea of what it would take to finish the Gnat but was eager to take a more calculating look. Ty is a paint and body man at Bob McDorman Chevy. Mike also contacted Bob DeLay, our newsletter editor and sole reporter, about the meeting. Bob is the project coordinator on the Gnat. At 1730 the three men met at the hangar. They discussed what the process would be in order to finish the Gnat.

Afterwards, at the Board meeting that night, Mike Lorenzi and Bob DeLay informed the board that the Gnat would have to be sand blasted, have a sealant sprayed on, body filler applied then painted. There would also need to be a portable spray booth set up. Mike and Bob also stated that most of the paint may be donated to H.A.S.

The officers and board members agreed to the project and came up with a $500 budget. The budget would only cover materials other than the paint. It was agreed to that one color, medium Silver Gray, would be applied.

On October 19th, Wayne Swisher surprised Mike Lorenzi by bringing into the hangar 2 gal. of paint reducer, 2 gal. of epoxy primer, 2 gal. of epoxy primer catalyst, 3 pints of acrylic urethane enamel and 2 gal. of acrylic urethane enamel paint (medium gray). Over $1500 dollars worth.

Ty had been able to contact Dave Reed at Moores PBG to get the painting and primer supplies donated for the Gnat.

Now for the fun part. We need volunteers. If you would like to join in on the fun, contact Bob DeLay at 614-846-2876. you may also contact Wayne Swisher at 740-653-8593 or Mike Lorenzi at 740-808-1642.

It is extremely important that we get moving on the Gnat and other projects. Our performance greatly reflects our ability to get future funding.

THE BOARD CANDIDATES OFFER STATEMENTS
Voting for the open board position will take place in November. The following are statements provided by candidates for the open board position:

MIKE LORENZI
Dear fellow members. My name is Michael Lorenzi. Some of you know me as “Big Mike”. I’m running for the open Board of Directors position. My opponents are Steve Clapper and Jim Ridgeway. Both these gentlemen have been with H.A.S. for a long time.

Steve is one of the original four members and is currently President and one of the Board of Directors (which is the position that is open for this election). Steve has been very instrumental in getting the group everything from projects to a new hangar. Steve has always taken the groups best interest to heart and applied his decisions accordingly. I'm proud to know him as a fellow member and friend.

Jim joined on June 27, 1995. Jim was once our Treasure and is now a key addition to the work being performed on the A-26. Jim, along with his wife Kathy, spend most of their weekends taking the PX to airshows, gunshows and model train shows. The PX, for some of you that may not know, iw our main source of income at the moment. I would like to personally thank Jim for his help in keeping the lights on.

It may sound as if I’m campaigning for Steve and Jim. I’m not. I just wanted to give you some idea of what I’m against. I personally joined H.A.S. on September 9, 1998. Elections in November of that year left an opening for club Secretary. I was nominated and won (mostly because there was no one running against me.) I did not  take the position lightly. I worked very hard in keeping accurate records. I stayed Secretary until July 30, 1999. A change in careers made it impossible to give the position the proper attention it needed. I resigned and handed the position over to Rick Bowden.

I could go on and explain what I’ve done for the group since I joined but the stories of time and sacrifice, to help the club out, wouldn’t be any different than many other club members.

I would like to talk about the future of H.A.S. and the issues I would support as Board Member.

I will support and work towards getting more members involved. I know we could do this by having weekend outings. Like cookouts, trips to museums, trips to ball games (i.e.Col. Blue Jackets, Cleve. Browns...) I would like to have a super bowl party at the hangar. I want to make H.A.S. a fun place to be.

I will support and work towards better communication between the Board and H.A.S. members.

I will support and work towards the general welfare of H.A.S. and always keep the members best interest at heart. I would like your vote this November and to represent you to the best of my ability. Thank you for your time.

STEVE CLAPPER
Hello everyone. It’s that time again to vote for a member to be on the Board of Directors and after that, the elections of officers. First I want to thank all of you for your support over the years as being President and serving on the board of Directors.

Over the years the accomplishments have been many and it has been a great pleasure to be a part of it. So on that note, I would like to continue to serve as President and Director.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

9. 2001 Signed the lease on the hangar and added the office and restroom to the hangar.
10. 2002 had a drawing of a museum building made to help start raising money for the museum.

MY PLANS FOR THE FUTURE

2. acquire money and grants to fund the day to day running of the museum and hangar.
3. try to get a partnership with the Air Force Museum.
4. Finally to do my best to see that H.A.S. has a bright future.
Again thank you for support over the years,
      Steve Clapper, President.

JIM RIDGWAY
Hi! I am Jim Ridgway and running for the board of directors p0osition for the squadron. I have been a member since 1996 and have been involved with the PX, A26 restoration, and all of the air shows we have done plus was treasurer for several years. I am retired from Lucent Technologies and the Air Force Reserves. have been in several leadership rolls both with Lucent and the Air Force. I know the importance of keeping cost under control and believe I can enhance the leadership of our group. We are at a time now we need to get more people involved with the museum and other potential restoration projects. I encourage all eligible members to exercise their right to vote. This is what the people we honor in our museum fought for down through the years.
     thank you,
    James W. Ridgway
