ANOTHER B-29 TAKES TO THE AIR ‘DOC’ HAS BEEN SAVED FROM THE TARGET FIELDS OF CHINA LAKE

Another B-29 is being restored for flight. It is the result of one man’s dream. Not willing to give up on finding a B-29 Tony Mazzolini of Cleveland spent years finding one to restore. Finally at China Lake he found one which the Navy owned for target practice. By negotiating with the Navy he was able to buy and restore and then trade a B-25 to the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. Solicit- ting the help of the Boeing Wichita where the B-29 nick named ‘Doc’ had been built, work began there. After many years

completion is expected in 2002 if all goes well. Look for it in the show circuits.

VOLUNTEER PROJECT TEAMS
activities and updates of latest information.
Be sure to contact the editor to inform him of latest activities and instructions for others.

AIRPLANE JACKS:
Wayne Swisher, Bruce Brudzinski, Don Bell.
The airplane jacks are needed for the testing of the landing gear retraction on the A-26. This is probably the most important project to getting the A-26 back in the air. There are 2 large, 2 medium and 1 small jack. They need to be cleaned, rebuilt if necessary and tested.

GNAT:
Rob George, Earl Watkins, Bob DeLay, Don Bell .
The GNAT needs to have the body work finished and prepped for painting. This includes removal of previous filler and roughing the surfaces with very coarse sandpaper so that filler will adhere. Block sanding of the new filler and primer paint. Tires need to be foam inflated, struts reinforced and decals or markings will be added for a finished product. The GNAT will be used as a static display, taken in parades and as a prop for selling pictures of people sitting in it during our airshow. Protective canopy cover needed to protect interior.

TUGS:
Wayne Swisher, Si Debolt, Bruce Cook, Bruce Brudzinski, Michael Grant
The tugs, Little John and Fat Boy, need some tender loving care on a regular basis. Little John has a dragging starter and Fat Boy needs a good once over.

LANDSCAPING:
Rob George, Don Bell, Wayne Swisher
Spring has arrived. Grass has to be seeded around the hanger. Flowers need to be planted and general lawn care throughout the summer. We do have a lawn mower.

OFFICE DOORS:
Rob George, Frank Leach
The office, bathroom and utility room doors need to be sanded, stained and handles reinstalled. Signs installed.

GROUP ACTIVITIES:
Earl Watkins
This would involve someone presenting to the group information on field trips, cookouts, ball games and anything else members would enjoy doing together as a group.

PULLING TOGETHER WE CAN ALL MAKE H.A.S. SOMETHING WE CAN BE PROUD OF. Please call Mike Lorenzi to become a member of one of these teams.

TESTING THE ENGINES ON THEA-26
April 3 was the magic date

After nearly three years of patience and perseverance, the A-26 Invader is progressing towards completion. On April 3rd Branson gave the okay and the radials came to life. First belching blue smoke and then roaring to life. Nothing sounds like a radial. it is raw power. History was vividly brought to life at that moment. There was satisfaction on all of the faces present. As they reached operating temperature they purred and the day was complete. A special congratulations goes to the guys who made this possible especially the following active volunteers:

Welcome to new team member Tom Saddler.

Last minute checks.

Into the scattered sunshine.

Everyone pitches in to make this day.

The Douglas A-26 Invader was ignited again on Friday 26. Below Branson gives the go ahead to start her up.

The guys are now working with bigger smiles on their faces

Work on the generator and the hydraulics of the braking system are

Jerry goes for the fire extinguisher while Jim Baldwin watches as the radial comes alive.

When the engines were fired up on Friday 26, Branson, Jim Ridgeway and Jim Baldwin were in the cockpit monitoring all systems at various RPMs to check out all of the operating systems.

There is nothing like the sound of those radials. They performed like clocks. Not all systems did as well so it’s back to the hangar for more work. CONGRATULATIONS GUYS!! YOU MAKE US PROUD!! as this

 This Month in History

May 18, 1953- Jacqueline Cochran, flying a Canadian-built F-86 Sabre at Edwards AFB, California, became the first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound. In so doing, she broke the international speed record for a 100-km closed course by averaging 652.337 mph, and also broke the women’s jet speed record.
