MEETING CHANGED TO 4th WEDNESDAYS MEETING NOTICE
June, July and August membership meetings will be held on fourth
Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at the hangar. When the airshow
season ends we’ll consider Saturdays.
Last
month’s Mystery Plane...
No winner but someone knew something...
Last month’s mystery plane was a Lockheed P2V
Neptune which flew from Perth, Australia. It was
nicknamed ‘The Truculent Turtle’. The news of the
flight was in every newspaper and news broadcast around
the world. This non stop world record flight
demonstrated the ability of America to fly missions much
to the displeasure of the Russians.
A couple years ago The Dispatch searched for the plane
and followed up on many stories of it’s demise
including the possible destruction at Rickenbacker Air
Base. The plane was found for the Dispatch at the Museum
of Naval Aviation in Pensacola by Bob DeLay who had
visited it there a short time before..
TUSKEGEE AIRMAN CAPT. HAROLD SAWYER PASSED AWAY
Harold Sawyer recently passed away. He was a
resident of the east side of Columbus. Harold was one of
the original Tuskegee Airman who flew with the fighter
squadron in Italy where flying our of Ramitelli on July
12, 1944 he made his first kill over France while
escorting B-24‘s. He brought down a FW-190 while
flying a P-51 Mustang. In the photo above Capt. Sawyer
is shown receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross from
Colonel Noel Parrish. We honor Capt. Sawyer and salute
all the Tuskegee Airmen for what they have done and for
what they represent...the best of Americans.
If you’d
like to sponsor a newsletter call Bob at 614-846-2876.
It’s only $65 and will allow you to dedicate the issue
to family or friend.

WHERE
DOES THE MONEY COME FROM TO OPERATE THE SQUADRON?
Well
surprisingly most of it comes from the efforts of those
who operate the PX at airshows as well as their efforts to
sell things at the Gahanna Flea market. It’s true. Did
you know that they made about $4,000 at the Akron airshow
in June? Normally they make about $2,000 at a show.
So
who does all of this work and travel? Steve Clapper and
Barb, Kathy and Jim Ridgway, Diane and Jerry McDaniel,
Speedy and Rhonda, John Scialabba, Earl Watkins, Robb
George.
The
problem is they need help. Can you pitch in and help? Even
if you couldn’t go for the entire weekend, they would
appreciate if you only helped one day. It’s really too
much to expect these few dedicated individuals to do this
all the time when we all benefit from this money. There is
always time for you to see the show and if space is
available you may hitch a ride in one of the planes that
is going to the show. Call Kathy at 614-899- 9690 to help.
They need you NOW !!
Also save your items for the Gahanna Flea Market:
Household items, jewelry, appliances, tools, furniture, No
clothes. We’ll let you know where to bring them. |

WINGS
OF VICTORY AIRSHOW...the countdown begins. |
As
the days near, the final preparations are here for the air show. Did you
sign up to volunteer for the airshow last month? Call president Steve
Clapper to get your name on the volunteer list.
New this
year will be two pilots from the Black Sheep Squadron. Jim Hill and Tom
Emerage will be on hand for autographs. If you have ever watched the
History channels Black Sheep Squadron show, you have probably seen these
two gentlemen interviewed with comments about how the squadron really
was.
Gregory ‘Pappy’
Boyiington was the squadron leader of the Marine flyers. Boyington
received the Medal of Honor from the U.S. Congress for his efforts. The
unit was a activated reserve unit. It is interesting to note that of the
81 medals of Honor issued in the Pacific theatre, 41 went to the Marine
Corps.
The Tuskegee
Airmen will again be with us minus Harold Sawyer who recently passed
away. Lancaster Visitors Bureau is assisting with a poster for the air
show.
Rides will
be available in a Hughes 500 and the PT-17 Stearmans.
July issue
of Country Living magazine had the full color story about the A-26 and a
notice of the Wings of Victory airshow.
The local
cable TV broadcast of an interview by Stan Robinson of Interface Video
with Public Affairs Officer Bob DeLay took place on Wednesday June 5th.
Bob was assisted by PR Specialist Emily Lorenzi.
Channel 53
has been selected as Video Media sponsor for the airshow is working on
the special about the squadron and the airshow.
The
following aircraft are scheduled to appear: P-51 Mustang, F4U Corsair,
TBM Avenger, YAK 9, T-6, SNJ, BT-13, BT-15, B-25, L-39, Russian A-16,
DeHaviland C Venom, PT-17 Stearmans,

AIRPLANE
JACKS:
Wayne Swisher, Bruce Brudzinski , Don Bell
The airplane jacks are now being rebuild for the testing of the
landing gear retraction on the A-26. This is probably the most
important project to getting the A-26 back in the air. There are 2
large, 2 medium and 1 small jack. Branson is working on side
mounting of jacks for the nose in order to raise the forward
gear.
GNAT:
Bob DeLay has been named team leader by the Board. Earl Watkins is
doing research. Rob George, Earl Watkins, Bob DeLay, Don Bell
The GNAT needs to have the body work finished and prepped for
painting. This includes removal of previous filler and roughing
the surfaces with very coarse sandpaper so that filler will
adhere. Block sanding of the new filler and primer paint. Struts
are being reinforced and decals or markings will be added for a
finished product. The GNAT will be used as a static display, taken
in parades and as a prop for selling pictures of people sitting in
it during our airshow. Protective canopy cover needed to protect
interior. Don Bell and Wayne Swisher removed the right Main wheel
and Wayne had it foamed for static display and towing. Team
members need to check the project file in office for tasks to be
done.
TUGS:
Wayne Swisher, Si Debolt, Bruce Cook, Bruce Brudzinski,
Michael Grant
The tugs, Little John and Fat Boy, need some tender loving care on
a starter and Fat Boy needs a good once over.
LANDSCAPING:
Rob George, Don Bell, Wayne Swisher
Spring has arrived. Grass has to be seeded around the hanger.
Flowers need to be planted and general lawn care throughout the
summer. We do have a lawn mower.
GROUP
ACTIVITIES: Earl Watkins.
HANGAR
BOSS STILL NEEDED - WE KNOW YOU’RE OUT THERE.
We want someone to check fire extinguishers and serve as hangar
boss for hangar maintenance. This would be the point man for
making sure everything is in order and reporting details to the
board. Organizational skills necessary.
PULLING
TOGETHER WE CAN ALL MAKE H.A.S. SOMETHING WE CAN BE PROUD
OF.
Turn
in all volunteer hours to Dick Debevoise TODAY. Clipboard in

information. Be sure to contact the editor to inform him of latest
