CHRISTMAS
PARTY WAS A GREAT SUCCESS
The Historical
Aircraft Squadron teamed up with the Fairfield Co. Pilots Association,
and the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter 443 to hold a
combined Christmas Dinner at our hangar. Everyone agreed that this was a
good idea that should continue in the years to come.
Ed
Gillespie was the guest speaker. Ed entered into the world of flying
at the age of 12 and went on to become a Naval Aviator. He eventually
became a test pilot for North American Aviation and then with North
American Rockwell as well as Rockwell International. His adventures
are legendary. There are quite literally thousands of stories within
his years that are spellbinding. However Ed decided to tell one of his
other stories.
Ed went
on to keep the audience attention with the little unknown side of his
career by telling his Sailing adventures. The main focus was his trip
to sail a boat with a friend across the North Atlantic. They departed
from New York City and ended up on the Siene River in Paris, France
after nearly loosing the ship in a monster storm. The trip celebrated
the 50th anniversary of Lindberg’s flight. It was a fascinating
story.
FEEDBACK
ON THE CHRISTMAS PARTY
All the
feedback we got about the Christmas party was very positive.
(of course, you realize, any complaint means you're on the spot for next
years party).
The food was outstanding and I'm sure none of the 92 attendees went away
hungry. Our speaker, Mr. Gillespie was very entertaining. Now let's see!
"What Was It. Oh yes, The Whale!"
Barb and I want to thank everyone who helped make the party a success,
especially Larry and Stella, Craig who roasted two large turkeys and
Lowell and Carolyn Fisher who made the punch.
Our thanks to those who donated door prizes, especially Fairfield Air
Ventures for donating a helicopter ride, won by Tom Carroll, a member of
H.A.S.
Thanks
to H.A.S. for the hangar and the effort to reposition all the
aircraft. The fast set up and clean up by everyone was appreciated.
I intend
to poll all three organizations to see if they want to go for it again
in 2006. It seems that most individuals I talked to are in favor of
the threesome.
One more
thank you, to my wife Barb who put in a lot of hours on my behalf. Tom

ED
GILLESPIE SPOKE AT THE CHRISTMAS PARTY
Ed
Gillespie, test pilot and lifetime adventurer spoke at the Christmas
party and shared his story of sailing across the Atlantic in a small
sail boat to celebrate Lindburgs 50th anniversary flight. He sailed
from New York City to Paris. The trip was full of hazards and
challenges that only someone like Ed could have met successfully. Ed’s
career is filled with so many unusual adventures that one could fill volumes
of books on his life. We hope to hear more about this life and it’s
many adventures.
