FOUR FLIGHTS THURSDAY MORNING STARTED FROM LEVEL WITH ENGINE POWER
ALONE...INFORM THE PRESS
quote from a telegraph from Kitty Hawk to Dayton
Thus
on December 17, 1903, began the saga of man’s flight. A dream that
had existed from the beginning of recorded history. Many doubted that
it had actually occurred.
The
Wright brothers hurried home to begin improvements on their airplane.
They knew better than anyone the difficulties of flying that plane.
However they were quick to improve it.
Since
that flight we have built fantastic flying machines but still have not
successfully built a flying replica of the aircraft that started it
all.
Our
attempts to replicate the Wright Flyer only serve to prove how
difficult the task was for the Dayton, Ohio brothers was.
The
Wright Flyer III incorporated improvements that eventually were
demonstrable and manageable.
Wilbur
died of Typhoid at the young age of 45. Orville however lives to the
ripe old age of 76 and lives to see the many innovations of the age.
These include the development of jet aircraft and the huge bombers of
WWII. (and our own A-26)
I
wonder if Orville was impressed with and surprised at aviations fast
and impressive development. Or perhaps he would have just said...I
told you so.
Orville
Wright died on January 30, 1948 three days after suffering a heart
attack. Wilbur had died in 1912. He was the pilot on the first powered
flight. -editor
