 SUCCESS

‘SUCCESS FOUR FLIGHTS THURSDAY MORNING STARTED FROM LEVEL WITH ENGINE POWER ALONE...INFORM THE PRESS
quote from a telegraph from Kitty Hawk to Dayton

Thus on December 17, 1903, began the saga of man’s flight. A dream that had existed from the beginning of recorded history. Many doubted that it had actually occurred.

The Wright brothers hurried home to begin improvements on their airplane. They knew better than anyone the difficulties of flying that plane. However they were quick to improve it.

Since that flight we have built fantastic flying machines but still have not successfully built a flying replica of the aircraft that started it all.

Our attempts to replicate the Wright Flyer only serve to prove how difficult the task was for the Dayton, Ohio brothers was.

The Wright Flyer III incorporated improvements that eventually were demonstrable and manageable.

Wilbur died of Typhoid at the young age of 45. Orville however lives to the ripe old age of 76 and lives to see the many innovations of the age. These include the development of jet aircraft and the huge bombers of WWII. (and our own A-26)

I wonder if Orville was impressed with and surprised at aviations fast and impressive development. Or perhaps he would have just said...I told you so.

Orville Wright died on January 30, 1948 three days after suffering a heart attack. Wilbur had died in 1912. He was the pilot on the first powered flight. -editor

 MEMBERS RECOGNIZED

The dinner this year was held at the Best Western in Lancaster. We had our own meeting room with a delicious buffet dinner laid out for us in the room. Attendance was up this year and so were the awards.

If you missed it you better make plans to attend next year. It was a great time.

Member of the Year, Greg ‘Scott’ Morehead received his award to the delight of the attendees. President Steve Clapper presented the award and once again thanked Scott for all of his work with photography and his excellent production of the Wings of Victory program.

Steve mentioned that the program ranks far above other airshows and speaks highly of our organization.

Scott truly sets an example for all of us by his efforts for the squadron.

Congratulations and many thanks to you Scott.

BUSINESS PERSON RECOGNIZED BY THE SQUADRON FOR HER CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORICAL AIRCRAFT SQUADRON

For the first time we awarded a member of the community for their contribution to the Historical Aircraft Squadron. This award to allow us to say thanks for their efforts in helping us to promote the history and preservation of aviation.

Our WebMaster who donates all of her time and expense to allowing us to have a web site that is professional and always up to date was named the recipient of the Community Service Award for 2002.

Crissy Devine received her award at the dinner from president Steve Clapper. Steve stated that because of her unselfish devotion to the squadron as our Webmaster, we wanted to award her this first Community Service Award.

At the conclusion of these award presentations, Vice President Wayne Swisher stepped forward to present Steve Clapper with another award to recognize his efforts as a founding member of the squadron and for his ongoing efforts to provide leadership as the squadron grew throughout these years. This award has a very small number of possible recipients and will only be given when one of the founders qualifies for exceptional contributions to the organization.

The award was called the ‘Founders Award’ and this too was a first time this award was given to a member.

Congratulations Steve for a job well done.
