CENTRAL OHIO FLYER’S STORY IS INCLUDED IN THE NEW BOOK ... ‘FLYBOYS’

Phil VonVille was a 20 year old Corsair pilot from Columbus, Ohio who was flying off the USS Bennington. On his last mission he was sticking napalm bombs into the caves on Okinawa in support of our troops as the landed on what was considered the invasion of the first of the Japan home islands.
On his last bomb run, he delivered his napalm and pulled into a steep climb-out when all hell broke out. A large shell tore through the floor of the cockpit and shredded his knee cap. Phil passed out and when he awoke, blood was everywhere. He had a large metal fragment sticking in his head and boots full of blood.
After leveling the plane he placed his belt around his leg to stop the bleeding from the shattered knee. This the same story as related to Bob DeLay a few years ago. He called the Bennington to say he was coming on board. They ordered him to ditch but all Phil could remember was the lecture that morning about the sea being infested with shark. With all of the blood he knew he’d not survive a water landing.
So on board he came with his crippled F4U. Gear up and drifting in and out of consciousness. He got on board and passed out. The F4U was pushed over the side and Phil spent the Open Board/business meetings are held the after membership meetings.
In that instant his flying career ended. The shock was so great that all of his body hair fell out and never grew back but he survived by the will of a 20 year olds determination.
In recent years he was honored at the Midland Confederated Airforce show by getting a ride on the lap of an F4U driver. Phil lives in Delaware county and is an avid supporter of military aviation.

 PRESIDENT'S CORNER

We had a good turn out for our meeting in January. Hopefully it will continue for February 14th the second Saturday of the month.

We are going to be discussing this
year's airshow as one topic on the agenda, and should have several more items to discuss.

We now are owners of a small fork lift.
It is in pieces and needs put back together. Anyone interested in helping show up on Saturday's. It will be a helpful addition to our squadron, once we get it running.

Speedy has brought the truck for the PX to the hangar. We will be getting it ready for this year's airshow's. The PX is one of the ways we raise money for our group to pay the bills.

We are going to try and do more this
year as I have stated before. There is going to be a tour of the airport and our hangar on February 4th by 5-7 year old kids between 10AM and 1PM. Anyone, who wishes to help, please show up.

Hope to see many of you on the 14th.

Jim Ridgway

 THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

February 6, 1908
Bids for the Army’s first airplane were considered by Board of Ordinance and Fortification which recommended acceptance of bids by J.F. Scott, A.M. Herring, and the Wright Brothers. All three bids were approved by Secretary of War.

February 10, 1908
The first Army airplane contract with the Wright Brothers was signed by Captain Charles Wallace for the Signal Corps. Herring and Scott were also awarded contracts but failed to produce planes.

February 15, 1908
Bids were received for the Government airship under the revised specifications; The contract was awarded to Captain Thomas S. Baldwin on 24 February.!

LETS FINISH THE WAR ON TERRORISM....SUPPORT THE TROOPS.
We now know more than ever what this war requires. It is not a one battle and go home war. Everything is new about this war. Already we have eliminated most of the criminals but many more must be found and eliminated. The war on sea pirates around the world in the 1800’s was a similar war...we won that one.
